The Langstone
Discovered by Shipwreck Hunters Australia as part of their Series 2 Production on Disney+
The Langstone was a 766-tonne, three masted Norwegian iron barque that departed Bunbury on a fine morning at 6.30 a.m. on Saturday, 8 February, 1902. However by noon a gale from south-south-west to south-west gale commenced with a heavy cross sea running, and at 2pm that day she ran into Naturaliste Reef. Initially settling on top of the reef she soon slipped off and sank within 10 minutes.
All thirteen onboard manned the life rafts and they made it to shore some 30 miles north of Bunbury near Lake Preston at around 5.00 p.m. There was one fatality between abandoning ship and reaching the beach.
56.8m long and 9.5m beam. Built in 1869, owned C.B. Mørch carrying timber for Millar Bros’, and Jarrah Timber Co. Langstone was carrying 721 tons of timber (presumably Jarrah) some of which may be visible in the model.
The wreck is protected under the Commonwealth Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018
